Central Controlled Irrigation System (CCIS)
Our City has utilized a Central Controlled Irrigation System (CCIS) for city-maintained landscapes since the mid-1990s. The current system has allowed us to efficiently irrigate our parks, medians, and landscape throughout the City. Our technology has advanced, but our need to stay current with technology and research water-saving opportunities has also increased.

Research
Some of our research has led us to a rebate program released by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) that will help us in a project to upgrade to a new CCIS, thus continuing our water conservation goals. For the current phase of this project, we have focused our efforts on collecting technical data for all the parks and landscaped areas in the south end of Fontana. The information will be used to implement cost effective and practical retrofits and equipment replacements.

These locations were chosen because of their large areas of irrigated turf as well as the age and condition of the existing controllers. The rebate will also give us a number of different tools to help us improve our water conservation efforts.

Water Conservation Partners
In addition to the rebate program, the City has been working on several different approaches to water conservation. We have partnered with the Inland Empire Landscape Alliance, which promotes a networking environment for brainstorming new ideas on water conservation and helps us stay on track in meeting industry standards.

We have also partnered with the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) to perform water audits on our largest irrigated areas and medians. We have requested a comprehensive assessment of our water use conducted by water auditors who will provide specific recommendations for reducing water use and improving the irrigation systems in our landscaped areas. These reports will serve as a reference and guide in our project to upgrade the current irrigation system.

Irrigation Supply Vendors
We continue to work with our irrigation supply vendors to make sure we have the most practical and water-conserving products available. Our city will be the first to beta test a new spray head that will drastically reduce the amount of water used to irrigate, yet put down enough water to serve the plants’ needs, right where it’s needed.

The City of Fontana Public Works Department is dedicated to consistently researching and finding ways to preserve and protect our natural resources and to explore the money-saving potential of these efforts.
