With road improvements at Cherry Avenue scheduled to continue until at least
early 2008, it is no wonder that citizens are beginning to map out travel plans for the big
races at California Speedway on Labor Day weekend from August 31 to September 2. Luckily,
the Fontana Police Department has had time to develop a traffic program that alerts residents
and helps them to avoid the major traffic delays.
Last year, the Fontana Police Department started a new traffic program for
the Labor Day weekend crowds. They asked residents to avoid Cherry Avenue between Baseline
Road and Valley Boulevard. When traveling west, citizens were asked to use the 210
Freeway from Sierra Avenue and pass west of the speedway before exiting. A warning
was also sent to avoid extreme traffic congestion by staying away from Cherry and Etiwanda
Avenues. According to Corporal Brian Heaviside with the Fontana Police Department, due to
the success of last year's program, only a few changes will be added for this year's Labor
Day event.
"We found this past February that traffic on Slover Avenue can back up, so
we are advising drivers to take Slover Avenue to Mulberry Avenue and South to the 60."
Additionally, there will be some forced right turns and road blocks.
"Cherry Avenue northbound at Walnut Avenue will be a right turn only and
the State Highway Patrol will close off Arrow Route, Whittram Avenue, and Randall Avenue."
Corporal Heaviside added that "Baseline Road is not expected to be too bad as it is a nighttime
race."
He does warn all drivers who choose to venture out in the direction of the
Speedway to simply avoid all streets from Foothill Boulevard to Slover Avenue.
