On Friday, October 26, 2007 Mayor Mark Nuaimi, the Fontana City Council,
Dr. John Husing, Ph.D, and dozens of civic leaders and residents gathered for the official
groundbreaking of the new Cypress Avenue Overcrossing at I-10. The event marked the beginning
of the Interstate 10 Commerce Corridor Improvement Project. The construction will originate
at Valley Boulevard and span the Interstate, the Mulberry Channel, and the Union Pacific
Railroad, ending at Slover Avenue. The projected completion date is mid-2009.
The purpose of the I-10/Cypress Overcrossing is to
enhance traffic mobility within Fontana's boundaries. The widened thoroughfare will allow
for four lanes of traffic from Slover Avenue to Valley Boulevard, access ramps to improve commuting
time for emergency vehicles and travelers moving North or South of the I-10 Freeway.
Reducing traffic and emergency response times are just two of the benefits of the I-10/Cypress
Avenue Overcrossing.
In June, 2007 the City of Fontana announced that $5 million in Federal funding
had been committed to this project. $17.5 million was provided by the Fontana Redevelopment
Agency and the City had already spent $2 million on Environmental and Engineering costs.
Recently, the $86 million that was to be given to the county from the Proposition
1B bonds, voted for by many San Bernardino County citizens, was allocated to Los Angeles
County projects.
The Prop 1B bond money was a favorable vote for everyone in the county as
the monies were to be invested in the improvement of transportation infrastructures along
the corridor and in other areas.
As a result of the designation of funds to Los Angeles County, Mayor Nuaimi
along with the mayors from Rialto, Colton, San Bernardino, and Ontario have united to lobby
for support. A video of the campaign may be seen at www.bridgetothenation.com
Dr. John Husing, Ph. D has lent his name to the I-10 Corporate Corridor campaign.
Dr. John Husing, the keynote speaker at the groundbreaking, is a leading
authority on the impact of the goods movement industry on the region, and in particular the
role as a provider of upward economic mobility. He and Gilllian Zucker, President of the California
Speedway, have both lent their names to the campaign to get state and local funds to add
to the I-10 Corporate Corridor infrastructure improvements that would have come from Prop
1B.
As the campaign continues, the construction at the I-10 Cypress Avenue Overcrossing
will go on. As funding permits, improvements are planned to begin on Citrus Avenue/I-10 Interchange
following the completion of the Cypress Avenue project.
