PRESS RELEASE

Don Day puts the Neighborhood into neighborhood centers

Release Date: April 30, 2008

Fontana, California, April 30, 2008. The Mayor and City Council proudly name the Don Day neighborhood center as the feature center of the quarter. The facility, which is located South of the I-10 freeway at 14501 Live Oak Avenue next to Southridge Park, is a family hot spot and a perfect example of why Fontana has been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise Alliance. The center is a regular hub for families and local athletes and offers plenty of recreational features to include tennis and basketball courts, a popular swimming pool, a spacious park with several amenities, as well as a full neighborhood center with multipurpose room suitable for parties or adult and youth programming.

The Don Day neighborhood center was built over twenty years ago for the then emerging community of Southridge. The Community Center as it was originally coined became a focal point for community activities.

Today, the Center services approximately 4,800 people per year. While many adults use the facility, of the total number served, 75% are youth ages 18 and under. In the first quarter this year, a little over 1,000 people have already participated in at least one event at Don Day.

“Most of our classes are youth oriented including the Tiny Tots which is one of our main programs. We also offer dance and fitness classes for youth,” says Mike Molina community services coordinator of Don Day neighborhood center adding, “Our participant numbers reflect that we are meeting the community interests.”

Programming at the Don Day neighborhood center includes a variety of fun instructional health program favorites such as Jazzercise, Mexican Folk Dance, Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Salsa and Gymnastics . In fact, the Don Day neighborhood center is the only Fontana neighborhood center that offers gymnastics so it has truly become home to many aspiring athletes.

Says Molina, “There are a lot of both males and females that are in the gymnastics programs. Many go on to compete in local and regional gymnastic competitions as they become more advanced in our classes here.”

While the traditional health and fitness classes suit most personalities, there are others that are being introduced all the time to keep life at Don Day fun and entertaining.

New classes at the Don Day neighborhood center include Tiny Star Gymnastics, Theater Workshop for ages 4-14, Dog Obedience Training , and the popular One-Day Seminars which feature financial, retirement, and home buying informational topics to help any busy individual or family learn a new skill or find the assistance needed to succeed.

“The City of Fontana recently surveyed citizens and determined that there is an interest for more pre-school aged students and more parent-and-me interactive classes as well as adult workshops,” says Molina.

To address the community needs, family fitness still remains the cornerstone of the Don Day neighborhood center programming. In addition to the programming already listed, Don Day is now offering Soccer Skillz and Parent and Me Soccer Camps, Yoga for Kids, Hip Hop for Kids and Teens , an all new Co-ed Boot Camp program, Tennis , and Swimming .

The Don Day Pool is scheduled to open along with all area pools on Monday, June 9. Some of the features this summer include Water Aerobics , swimming lessons, pool safety demonstrations and more.
