COMMUNITY PREPARES FOR THE GREAT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT
Release Date: May 14, 2008
Mayor
Mark Nuaimi and the City Council, in partnership with the County of San Bernardino, its
24 cities and towns, and multiple local, state and federal agencies are working together
to urge residents to…
BE A SURVIVOR – GET READY NOW
We are hoping you’ll help us beginning in September to promote the “Steps to the ShakeOut.” The
goal of this outreach effort is to present a manageable, step-by-step approach for our
community members to become prepared. Although these steps are counting down to the Great
Southern California ShakeOut earthquake drill in November, the end result will be a public
that is better prepared for ANY disaster – earthquake or other.
- September = Create an Emergency Supplies Kit
- October = Create a Family Disaster Plan
- November = Practice, Drill and Reach Out
- Nov. 13 = Great Southern California ShakeOut Drill
- November and Beyond = Stay Involved. Preparedness should continue even after the
ShakeOut ends.
September
One of the most crucial preparedness steps is to maintain a stash of
emergency supplies – food, water, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and
emergency supplies and special items for medical conditions. Residents should maintain
food and water supplies for a minimum of 72 hours, but it’s best to prepare for two weeks.
A checklist of Emergency Supply contents is attached, as well as a Red Cross document
describing best practices for food and water storage. Complete emergency kits may also
be purchased from the Red Cross.
All residents may sign up for the ShakeOut event at www.shakeout.org.
