PRESS RELEASE

FONTANA COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO COUNT DOWN TO THE GREAT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT

Release Date: October 8, 2008

Mayor Mark Nuaimi and the City Council, in partnership with the County of San Bernardino, are urging residents to become prepared for a major natural disaster. Thus, as part of the “Be a Survivor – Get Ready Now” campaign, the City of Fontana recommends that, during the month of October, residents create a Family Disaster Plan. A Family Disaster Plan is an essential step in the road to preparedness, and includes deciding on evacuation routes, agreeing on a safe place to meet, and the designation of an out-of-state contact.

The “Be a Survivor – Get Ready Now” campaign stems from a larger, multi-agency outreach effort including cities and towns, counties, and multiple local, state and federal agencies to present a manageable, step-by-step approach for residents to become prepared. Known as the “Great Southern California ShakeOut”, the effort includes a series of disaster preparedness activities and culminates in a large-scale disaster drill in November.

In addition to the creation of a Family Disaster Plan, other steps of the “Be a Survivor – Get Ready Now” campaign involve building emergency supply kits and conducting practice drills. Complete emergency kits can be purchased from the Red Cross, or you may visit www.sbcfire.org/oes and click on Disaster Preparedness to download tips for creating an Emergency Supply Kit or a Family Disaster Plan.

Evidence that San Bernardino County is preparing for the ShakeOut is everywhere. Sheriff’s deputies are handing out disaster awareness pamphlets. ShakeOut messages are appearing on the Auto Club Speedway sign along I-10 and the Arrowhead Credit Union sign along I-215, and earthquake preparedness fliers are being distributed around the County in libraries and other public places.
  • September = Build an Emergency Supplies Kit
  • October = Create a Family Disaster Plan
  • November = Practice, Drill and Reach Out
  • Nov. 13 = Great Southern California ShakeOut drill
  • November and Beyond = Stay involved. Preparedness should continue even after the ShakeOut ends.

All residents may sign up for the ShakeOut event at www.shakeout.org.
