PRESS RELEASE
What
Veteran’s Day Means to Me essay contest begins
Release Date: October 2, 2008
Fontana,
California, September 15, 2008. The Mayor and City Council invite area youth
ages 18 and under to submit an essay of 250 words or less describing What
Veteran’s Day Means to Me. Essays are to be sent to the 2008 Dr. Charles
Koehler Memorial Veterans Day Essay Contest, 9460 Sierra Avenue, Fontana, CA 92335. The
top three winners will receive a U.S. Savings Bond of $100, $75, or $50, a public recognition
by the Mayor at a City Council meeting, a feature on KFON cable access channel 3 and
the opportunity to read the essay at the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony in Fontana on
November 11.
Last year, local student and essay contest winner, Andrea Ponce observed, “Life can be
stressful, we are all occupied with pursuing our dreams. However, I feel that it is essential
that we should take one day out of our lives to thank those who made it possible for
our dreams to come true. This is why Veteran’s Day is so important.”
Each year, hundreds of youth submit essays which are in turn judged by a
committee of local veterans. The winning essay is then read at the annual ceremony held
in Veteran’s Park, located at 17255 Merrill Avenue at 11 am on November 11.
