Fontana
opportunities for youth exceed the norm

Fontana,
California, May 15, 2008. The Mayor and City Council invite Inland Empire residents to take a look
at the programming being offered to youth through the Fontana Community Services Department. When combined with
the variety of local amenities available to young people, it is easy to see why Fontana has been nationally named
one of the 100 Best Communities for Youth by the America’s Promise Alliance.
The City of Fontana Community Services Department provides classes and events for young people throughout the
year. Whether one is looking to grow athletically, culturally, or academically, Fontana has something for anyone
and everyone.
Hip Hop, the dance craze of the younger generation, is available for kids, teens, and parents at two
Fontana locations. Beginning Wednesday, May 21 youth ages 10-13 are invited to join the Jack Bulik Teen Center
for the Hip Hop Dance Class at 16581 Filbert Street. The class is $25 for four weeks. A session for
children ages 14 and older is also available beginning Wednesday, May 28. The Don Day neighborhood center, 14501
Live Oak Avenue offers Hip Hop classes for kids, ages 8 to 12 and teens 13 to 17. Either class is $30 for 4 weeks.
The Don Day neighborhood center also offers an exclusive and comprehensive gymnastics program for beginners,
intermediate, and advanced gymnasts. Even children as young as 3 are learning to tumble and exercise in the Tiny
Stars Gymnastics where they learn using pre-k gymnastics equipment. Prices and times vary depending on
the level of difficulty. All classes are held during after-school hours. Lessons begin as early as Wednesday,

Youth looking to be more expressive may opt for any number of cultural arts programs in Fontana. Those interested
in a future in the entertainment industry may wish to register for Lights, Camera, Action! a course
designed to teach students ages 6-9 and 10-17 how to perform before an audience, how to speak in public, and
cold-reading. The class is $50 for 4 weeks. Don Day neighborhood center also offers Tiny Tots Theater for
ages 4-7 and helps budding stars become comfortable in front of an audience. The class is $30 for 4 weeks. Both
classes begin Tuesday, June 24 at the Heritage neighborhood center, 7350 W. Liberty Parkway.
Other cultural arts programs include classes in the arts. The Art Depot at 16822 Spring Street offers classes
year round. On Tuesday, May 13 Beginning Ceramics will offer children ages 5 and up an opportunity
to create a new piece of art for the home. The class teaches children how to use the potter’s wheel and the glazing
process. Enrollment is $50 for 5 weeks. The Don Day neighborhood center also offers a Cartooning class
which introduces youth ages 8 to 17 how to draw humorous, simplified faces and figures. The class is $40 for
4 weeks.
Academic assistance is also available through satellite programming with Tutor Whiz. Sessions are available
for math, phonics, test preparation, and reading assistance. For more information, or to register, please call

2008 has been a great year for youth in the city of Fontana. The community was recognized for it’s communitywide
programs as one of the 100 Best Communities for Youth, and the new Lewis Library and Technology Center,
8437 Sierra Avenue, complete with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. children’s library and Young Adult section
with the Teen Speedway are just two examples of the commitment that has been made to Fontana’s youngest generations.
The programming that is being provided by the community centers throughout the city are examples of how youth
in all areas are being offered unique opportunities to grow through physical, cultural, and academic resources.
