Release Date: May 22, 2008

Fontana, California, May 22, 2008. The Mayor and City Council invite local families and residents to join the Smart Kids After School program at the Jack Bulik Teen Center, 16581 Filbert Street on Friday, May 30 at 3:30 pm for a Memorial Day Commemoration honoring America’s heroes. This special event, co-sponsored by the 329th Quartermaster Company of the Army Reserves will feature hands-on activities, a presentation of a tribute quilt honoring the unit’s fallen Soldiers. The Henry J. Kaiser ROTC will present the colors, and the National Anthem will be from Smart Kids participants, Joshay and Jayshanai Walker. Admission to the event is free. The Smart Kids After School program is currently accepting donations to give to a Family Support Group with troops serving overseas and based out of San Diego.

The Smart Kids After School program is available to elementary and middle school students in three different school districts and has in excess of 2,000 students enrolled in the current school year. The educational enrichment program offers youth an opportunity to enrich their minds and lives through Project Learn, computer labs, health and wellness, activity enrichment programs and a Healthy Snack program. While focus on scholastic and nutritional well being is often highlighted, youth are also given unique social opportunities.

In October, 2007 a small group of students enjoyed fishing in the ocean with Friends of Rollo . The event marked the first time children had ever fished, and for some, it was the first visit to the ocean. In December, the Jack Bulik Teen Center provided a space for which all of the students were presented with Christmas presents from the teachers at Truman Middle School. In February, all Fontana teens were invited to a day filled with career seminars, college preparation information, and job interviews with the first of a series of Teen Fest events which together with Smart Kids are providing opportunities for youth to learn life skills.

The public is invited to the Memorial Day Commemoration on Friday, May 30. A listing of items that will be accepted for donation is available through the Jack Bulik Teen Center by calling (909) 428-8393.
