Water Safety and Lifeguard courses begin soon

Fontana,
California, May 9, 2008. The Mayor and City Council invite swimmers interested in saving lives to become
an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or receive Lifeguard Training to register for
the upcoming classes offered by the Fontana Aquatics program. Water Safety Instructor for swimmers
ages 16 years and older begins Friday, May 16 and is $175. Lifeguard Training for swimmers ages 15
and older begins Thursday, June 5 and is $150. The courses will be held at Heritage Pool, located at 7350 West
Liberty Parkway.
Become a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor in as little as two weeks. The certification
course will instruct swimmers in all the necessary skills to teach progressive swimming courses including Fundamentals
of Instructor Training which trains instructors to effectively communicate with a target audience.
In order to participate in and complete the course, students must swim front crawl, elementary back stroke, sidestroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly. Following successful completion of the program, students will be certified for Water
Safety Instructor and in Fundamentals of Instructor Training . Individuals must also be able
to tread water and float on the back for one minute. Water Safety Instructor classes are 5:00 pm to
8:00 pm on Fridays and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
Lifeguard Training will prepare anyone ages 15 and older to become a qualified lifeguard for the City
of Fontana Aquatics program. Following successful completion of the classes, students will receive certificates
in Lifeguard Training and First Aid as well as CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Participants will learn
to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, prevent drowning and treat injuries.
In order to participate and complete the course, students must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, retrieve
a 10 lb weight and swim with it 20 yards in approximately 100 seconds. Lifeguard Training is held
from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6 and from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, May
7-8.
