Guard! Fontana has Fencing
Release Date: September 30, 2008
Fontana,
California, September 29, 2008. The Mayor and City Council welcome Fontana’s
newest sport of fencing to the all new Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center
located at 15556 Summit Avenue. The classes are $65 for 4 weeks on Saturdays at 3 pm
for ages 6 to 17 or 4 pm for ages 17 and older. Both classes begin November 22. Equipment,
jacket, chest guard, and mask are provided during class sessions.
The first of its kind in the city, the new class will teach students young
and old to use an épée, lunge, compete one-on-one or in groups. Fencing is a focus driven
sport that involves quick wits, attention to detail, strategy, and physical abilities
in the arms and legs. This physical “chess match” teaches discipline and builds character.
Students learn basic footwork, attacks, defense, and strategy while enhancing concentration,
flexibility, balance, and speed.
