HISTORY: Benjamin Fernandez Park is the first park to be constructed in the newly annexed northeastern areas of Fontana. The park encompasses 2.3 acres of vacant land donated by the Fernandez family in the summer of 2000 and an additional 0.8 acres purchased by the City making the total park area a little over 3 acres in size. Construction for the project began in June 2008. The county was also involved in the project. Funding for the construction of the park came from a generous grant of $750,000 from the office of San Bernardino County Fifth District Supervisor, Josie Gonzales. Aside from being in the ideal location for a passive recreational area, Fernandez Park has several amenities that add to its allure. Some of the main park features include: • Meandering sidewalk • Picnic shade structure with four tables • Restroom facilities • Rose garden and dedicated monument within the raised planter • Barbecue area • Traditional playground • Open space for recreational play
