The Pacific Electric Inland Empire Trail (PE Trail) is proposed as a 20 mile multi-purpose trail extending from Claremont, through Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, and Rialto. The Master Plan has been completed, and the individual cities are now implementing their respective portions of the PE Trail. Two years ago, the first ¾ mile segment of the PE Trail in Fontana was completed through the downtown and Civic Center. Segment 2 of the adds an additional 7/8 of a mile of multi-purpose trail between Juniper Avenue and Tokay Avenue. A third segment (5a) has been completed through the Village of Heritage. Combined, Segments 1, 2 and 5a provide 2.1 miles of continuous multi-purpose pedestrian trail.

The existing abandoned rail road right-of-way, on which the PE Trail is located, is 80 feet wide and is consistent throughout each segment. However, the northerly 45 feet of that right-of-way is reserved for future rail considerations while the remaining 35’ is dedicated to the multi-purpose trail which will consist of a 15 foot wide concrete paved jogging/bike path and landscaping. The 45 foot reserved area can also be landscaped.

Segment 2. The first block, between Juniper Avenue and Cypress Avenue, is fully landscaped adjacent to Seville Park to provide connectivity from the PE Trail to the Park. The remainder of Segment 2 received initial landscaping that is limited to the areas immediately adjacent to the five street crossings. Each intersection also incorporates street crossing signage and bollards (to denote the end of the trail).

The City of Fontana received two funding grants for the construction of Segment 2. A $1.7 million Federal TEA grant was approved on July 17, 2007 and an additional $338,000 grant was awarded by the San Bernardino Associated Governments.
